      How is carbon monoxide formed?

Carbon monoxide (CO) is produced by incomplete combustion of carbonaceous materials such as natural gas, wood, oil, petrol and coal. It can be released from any source that consumes these fuels. Think, for example, of a gas stove, stove, heater, fireplace or car. When there is not enough oxygen present to burn the fuel completely, carbon monoxide is produced as a by-product of the incomplete combustion. Carbon monoxide is a dangerous gas because it is colorless, odorless and tasteless and therefore cannot be detected without a carbon monoxide detector. Exposure to high levels of carbon monoxide can lead to poisoning and even death.

It is advisable to install a carbon monoxide detector on every floor. The best spots are near potential sources of carbon monoxide. Think of kitchens, garages and laundry rooms. More guidelines and tips? read our blog about installing a carbon monoxide detector.
